Why it’s important to carefully pick your parking space

Parking is one of the necessary evils of owning a car, and for those of us who don’t own a driveway, it’s a daily challenge. It can be especially tricky to find a suitable place if you’re visiting a new or unfamiliar area. But when you’re trying to decide where to leave your car, it’s worth considering not just convenience, but also safety and security, too. That’s where dashboard cameras can help – but we’ll come onto those in just a moment!

Keeping your technology safe

Modern vehicles are packed with more technology and functionality than ever before – not just in the form of portable tech like cameras and laptops, but also integrated objects like satnav systems and stereos. But while this can make life easier in lots of ways, unfortunately it’s the portable technology that can prove to be valuable targets for thieves. It’s a big reason why choosing an appropriate parking space is absolutely vital, especially if you think you may be leaving your car until the evening.

Where to leave your car

Whenever you’re travelling to an unfamiliar area, it’s a good idea to choose a parking space that’s easy to find again later, as it can save you a lot of hassle getting back home later on. If you can find a parking garage, this is ideal. Not only will this provide you with a landmark that you can look for, but undercover parking garages have security features like CCTV and parking attendants, which can guarantee the security of your car.

If you can’t a parking garage on the other hand – or the local ones are full – your next priority should be to find a parking space that’s well lit and preferably in a busy area that sees a lot of road and pedestrian traffic. The reason for this is simple – the vast majority of thieves are opportunists, and they’re much less likely to target a vehicle if there’s a good chance they’ll be highly visible when doing it.

Could a dashboard camera help?

Dashboard cameras are becoming a popular accessory for drivers to add to their vehicles, and with good reason. With a dashcam in place, you can provide video evidence of any crashes or collisions that you’re involved in, which is incredibly useful when making insurance claims or filing other reports.

A dashboard camera can help you when your car is parked as well as when it is on the road. Some dash cams come with a parking mode option, which enables you to protect your vehicle while it is unattended. If the dashcam detects any movement within a certain distance, it will automatically turn on to film the scene – so even if your car is targeted, it’ll be able to provide the police with valuable evidence that can help prosecute the perpetrator.

As well as recording any vandalism or theft, parking mode can also record evidence of other vehicles colliding with yours and causing damage, so you don’t have to worry about ‘hit-and-runs’, which generally leave you saddled with the cost of repairs. Once again, though, the usefulness of parking mode on your dashcam is best combined with a bit of savviness when it comes to parking, so that you can guarantee maximum security for your car.

Choosing the right parking space can make a big difference to the safety and security of your vehicle, as well as your ability to find your way back to it later. If you are willing to spend just a few more minutes looking for the ideal parking space for your vehicle, it might be the difference between suffering a break-in and not. You want to be sure that your vehicle is going to be safe even when you aren’t there to protect it, so consider investing in a dashcam that offers parking mode security.
